Sarahs Story

Entering the world of online dating, I felt hopeful – little did I know, it would lead me down a path of heartache and betrayal.

For two and a half years, I was entangled in a tumultuous relationship with my ex, whom I met on Plenty of Fish.

What began as a seemingly perfect match soon unravelled into a nightmare of manipulation, deceit, and abuse.

Financial exploitation became a recurring theme in our relationship.

My ex attempted to secure loans totalling £40,000 in my name without my knowledge or consent.

He didn’t stop there; he shamelessly pilfered my car, leaving me stranded and helpless.

Our shared expenses went unpaid, yet he had no qualms about pocketing my half of the money and squandering it on his own desires.

To add insult to injury, he shamelessly borrowed money from me, promising repayment that never materialised.

The scars left by his actions extend beyond the financial realm. I endured the anguish of discovering his infidelity, shattered trust, and the unbearable pain of physical abuse on multiple occasions.

The trauma inflicted by his callous behaviour lingers long after our relationship ended.

My ordeal doesn’t stand in isolation. Every few months, I’m confronted with messages from fellow victims, seeking solace and validation in their shared experiences.

It’s a haunting reminder of the breadth of his deceit and the devastating impact he’s had on so many lives.

A register akin to Clare’s Law would have been a beacon of hope in my darkest moments.

With suspicions gnawing at my conscience, I yearned for a way to verify his past – to spare myself the anguish of discovering the truth too late.

The implementation of such legislation could be a crucial safeguard against future predators, offering a lifeline to those ensnared in toxic relationships.

Sadly, I’m just one of many. At least twenty other women have fallen prey to his web of lies and manipulation.

His recent jailing, while a semblance of justice, feels woefully inadequate considering the trail of destruction he’s left in his wake.

For some of us, the scars run deeper than financial loss. The emotional toll has been profound, driving some to the brink of despair.

Many of us continue to grapple with trust issues and mental health challenges, seeking solace in antidepressants and therapy.

As I reflect on my journey, I’m filled with a mixture of anger, sadness, and resilience.

While the wounds may never fully heal, I refuse to let his actions define me.

By sharing my story, I hope to shed light on the pervasive issue of romance fraud and inspire others to seek help and support in their own healing journeys.”
